Meet Nilla!  She is a 1-2 year old, 40lb yellow lab mix that was found stray in Mississippi.

Personality:  Nilla has a big heart! She’s playful, sweet, and is great with humans of all sizes (including children). She is so sweet and affectionate!  Nilla would love a home with a nice backyard where she can enjoy some outdoor time. She gets along well with other dogs and loves to play!  She has also been exposed to cats.  She will chase them but has the best of intentions – she just wants to play!

Training:  Nilla is still young and learning, but she’s eager to please and picking things up quickly.  She is housetrained and has done well in a crate .  She knows how to sit and is working on some other basic commands.  She can jump out of excitement so she is working on the “off” command to help with proper introductions.

Updates

GENERAL

Two weeks with sweet Nilla Wafer!  She is such a great dog!  She has a really affectionate and playful personality. She is becoming more confident every day, and now goes in and out of the dog door all by herself! She plays well with our two dogs, and is just the cuddliest dog we’ve ever known! We also just discovered that she really doesn’t shed much at all! Even the “Furminator” doesn’t get much fur when we brush her.

CRATE

She is doing such a great job with her crate. When we leave the house, we hear NO barking! Such a fast improvement! She has been left alone for up to 5 hours and is fine when we get home. She voluntarily goes into her open crate for a rest. She sleeps in a soft crate in the bedroom with us and does great all night! We’re so proud of her for making such huge strides! Not one accident in two weeks!

TRAINING

We are continuing leash training and she is doing amazingly well! We have been working on “SIT,” “WITH ME” (heal), “WATCH,” EASY WALK (walking on a loose leash),” “LEAVE IT,” “DOWN,” and “WAIT” commands, and she is doing great. She has the potential to be a very obedient dog. She loves her training treats. She likes to explore and chase (just discovered lizards!), but her energy when she does get excited is very playful, not aggressive.

PLAY

She reached out her paw to pat our younger dog, Stella, on the nose (boop!). So cute. She and Stella have been playing well together, running and wrestling. And she grooms our senior dog, Lucy’s, ears. So gentle. She is a happy, playful girl. She loves her bitey bones, and squeaky tennis balls!

INTERACTIONS

She has been to the dog park a number of times, and does great with many other dogs in the mix. She loves to run and hop and chase balls. Nilla’s most favorite thing continues to be hanging out with her person. If Cuddling was an Olympic sport, she would for sure bring home the Gold! Our cat has started to venture into the house, and we are working on getting Nilla used to the cat.

Overall, she is a very happy, curious, gentle, snuggly doggo who needs some love, patience, and continued basic training.

GENERAL

Four days with Nilla Wafer.  Overall, she is a great dog!  She has a really sweet and playful personality. Her food-guarding behaviors have abated, and she is now eating alongside our two dogs without incident. Some bitey bones and tennis balls have been added to the mix, and all is well between the dogs. Nilla sweetly initiates play with our dogs. She is becoming more comfortable and confident every day.

CRATE

She is still learning that people will not abandon her, but she has done pretty well when we have left the house or had to leave her in her crate. She’ll bark and cry for about 30-40 minutes and then calm down. This will only continue to improve. A stuffed bone gives her something to do and seems to help. She has been left alone for up to 5 hours and is fine when we get home. She voluntarily goes into her open crate for a rest.

TRAINING

Overall, she is a very sweet and curious girl. She learns quickly, and she is learning how not to counter serf and jump on things (and people) without permission.  We use the word “OFF!” to try to correct the behavior. She is house trained – has not had one accident – and has rung the bell on the door a few times. We jump up and say “Outside! Good girl” and let her out, to help her start to associate the bell with going outside.  She is doing well with the “SIT,” “WITH ME” (heal) and “WAIT” commands, and with the aid of a prong training collar looks to have a lot of potential for being a very obedient dog. Most of her energy is very playful.

PLAY

She reached out her paw to pat our younger dog, Stella, on the nose. So cute. She and Stella have been playing well together, running and wrestling. She is a happy, playful girl.

INTERACTIONS

She seems friendly with all the dogs we passed on our walks and met at the park. She whines at them, but that is because she wants to play, we think.  Nilla’s most favorite thing continues to be hanging out with her person. If Cuddling was an Olympic sport, she would for sure bring home the Gold! (see pix) She met five new people in a group yesterday (one of whom was up in her face a lot), and was sweet, kissy, and waggy the whole time.

Overall, she is a very happy, curious, gentle, snuggly doggo who needs a lot of love, patience, some basic training, and some confidence-building!

GENERAL

Nilla has been in foster for just one day.  Overall, she is a great dog!  She has a really sweet and playful personality. In just 24 hours, she has already made big strides. We had her on leash in a few rooms of the house yesterday. Today, she has been off leash some, and exploring a bit more. She has not eaten much yet, which is normal at this stage.

CRATE

She is still working on crate training.  She does pretty well in the crate if you are in the room with her.  She will go right in, but if left alone in the room while crated, she will bark and cry.  It is very early in the process and she is still learning. We are working on very short periods of time alone in the crate to help her learn that she is not going to be alone forever.  She has been sleeping in her crate without a peep if she’s in the same room as her human, and will also sleep well on a dog bed outside of a crate. She voluntarily goes into her open crate for a rest.

TRAINING

Overall, she is a very sweet and curious girl. She learns quickly and is very smart.  Her curiosity can get the better of her sometimes and she’s learning how not to counter serf and jump on things (and people) without permission.  We use the word “OFF!” to try to correct the behavior. She is house trained but is still training us how she communicates her need to go out.  She doesn’t bark much, but will let us know when someone comes to the door. She does seem to know the “sit” command. We got a prong collar for her today, and have worked on basic leash manners. She is not super food-motivated, but this might just be due to her short time with us. Her biggest challenge right now is learning boundaries with the other animals in the house.  Most of her energy is very playful but we have been trying to teach her some personal space manners around our two dogs (and help them understand the situation).

PLAY

She loves to chase – birds, people running by, squirrels, our cat!  We are easing in with toys since we have other dogs in the house. She seems like a happy, playful girl.

INTERACTIONS

She has done really well with our other dogs, mostly. She goes into the yard with them and took a walk with them without incident. She seemed friendly with all the dogs we passed on our walks. She whines at them, but that is because she wants to play.  She also met our cat for the first time today and chased her all over the house. It appeared to be playful, not aggressive, but the cat was not happy and is hiding out again.

Nilla’s most favorite thing right now is to be with her person.  She LOVES to cuddle, go belly up for some rubs, and she gives lots and lots of kisses. Since she is still learning to control her energy and boundaries.

Overall, she is a very happy, curious, snuggly doggo who just needs of love.  She will be a wonderful companion!
