Spencer

The CLR ad said his name was “Bumper,” from the car accident that brought him to you…

My daughter decided that a noble Lab such as he needed an equally noble name. He became Spencer-aka, The Black Prince: The Great Spencerian; sometimes Cochise/Texas to me. He never begrudged all of the latter-they were big names that suited his personality…He passed on May 10th, after a bout with a mouth cancer that moved quickly. His kidneys were also probably weakened by the accident back then. He fought Urinary problems for the past year along with all the other issues.

Nonetheless, he was the picture of courage to the very end.

When his human Mom’s job shifted her over The Pond to the UK, he came to stay with Granpog and Granmog-and joined Heidi, Annabelle and Finbar. It was a happy pack, with the occasional bout of tug-a-war; who got what toy, and what apple slice/carrot that fell to the floor to be claimed. He loved the water-period! It could be cold or warm, shallow or deep-he was tireless. If I was still a hunter, he would have been the best buddy in a blind one could have.Of course, the biscuit and Trader Joe’s Glucosamine tablet were just icing on the cake at the end of a workout.

He is missed every morning-as I sit at my office desk, there is no head to pet, ears to scratch-no soft eyes with a curious look, no smile when I come in the garage to see him eating. It is empty, but he is no longer suffering-and it is better now. He crossed The Bridge bravely-I was with him for comfort. Were it my turn, he would have done the same for me. He’ll be waiting…
