Meet Dane!  He is an 8 year old, gray-bearded gentleman that has been on quite the journey and stealing hearts along the way.  He was originally found stray in Virginia and was brought to CLR after over-crowding in the shelter.

Dane is dog and people-friendly, with a great temperament that makes him the perfect companion for those who appreciate a more relaxed lifestyle.  He is a lower energy boy and can be a bit of a couch potato, but he does have a skip in his step when a walk is involved!  He is great on a leash and the best companion for a stroll through the neighborhood.

Dane is not a flashy boy and doesn’t know many commands, but he does have great manners.  He is house-trained and is very well behaved.  Good boy, Dane!

We can’t wait to find this sweet boy his forever family!

Updates

TEMPORARY FOSTER UPDATE – Dane is SO sweet!  He definitely is a couch potato. He prefers to be up there and doesn’t care in the slightest about my dog. Even when she tries to play with him, he just ignores her.  He is just content being content.  He is very patient with our dog and tolerant of her energy.  He is still transitioning a bit, so I am curious to see if he would play with other dogs once he had some consistency.

Overall he has been extremely relaxed. He did amazing with his bath yesterday and got another one today.  He is such a good boy!  He did good on our walk today he definitely pulled less with the harness then just his collar.

We are trying to crate train him and he is adjusting.  He does bark a bit at first, but he does settle in. My fiance and I crated him again after his bath to try to dry him in there a bit and he barked for maybe 10 minutes before falling asleep even with hearing us and my dog.

He has been exposed to cats but the verdict is still out if he can be trusted. He did back off when my one cat growled and hissed at him and his tail was wagging the entire time.  Since he is only here a few days, I’m just keeping them separated but I figured that was good information to pass along!  We are so happy to be a part of this boys journey!

Today began with lots of happy wiggles and kisses. Sweet Dane is a joy and so easy going. He has a gentle, calm temperament and is always eager to join in whatever is happening next. He is settling into our home and routine. He is housetrained (and must have been in the habit of going out to poop after his meals, which makes life easy). He goes to the door when he needs to go out. This afternoon I wasn’t paying attention to his signals, so he barked once to let me know it was time to go potty. His dog bed has become his go to location, where he spends the day chilling. Throughout the day, Dane quietly approaches us to snuggle, suggest back yard playtime, agree to a walk, or wonder if it is meal time. He’s a great coworking buddy. He walks well on a leash, without pulling, both solo and with our lab. He seems comfortable with collar and harness. Dane’s nose engages the instant we are outdoors and he delights in exploring in the surroundings. We’ve played in the park, walked on residential/city sidewalks/nature trail, waited patiently and politely in a local shop while our foster people chatted with friends, and made new human friends at the neighborhood coffee shop. Dane enters and exits the car like a pro and rides well in the back.
Dane hangs out alongside our older dog and there have been no issues. He seems happy to share the room, share the floor, and share the sofa and snuggles. Speaking of snuggles, Dane is a love and never turns down snuggles. He offers kisses freely. Dane has one sneaky reveal–he is a counter surfer (who seems to know it is not acceptable behavior) and he is super interested in people food….which he doesn’t get from us but I imagine he received in the past). He responds quickly to leave it and doesn’t beg.
Dane is doing really well with his crate training. He’s learning to kennel up. As the previous caregivers noted, he will vocalize and bark for about 8 minutes once he realizes the crate door is closed, but after that he turns around 3-4 times, sighs the OK sigh, and settles in. He sleeps through the night in the crate. Dane hasn’t shown any interest in toys yet, and while he walks without pulling on the leash, and seems to know come, he doesn’t know about sit and (lay)down. He’s an observant and smart pup so sit and down will be fun homework this week.
I haven’t noticed much that startles Dane. He ignores sirens, kids playing outdoors, house noises including the doorbell. That said, the sound of a flag on a pole flapping in the wind startled him as did the noise of a city bus airbreak.
He is such a great boy!
